Zurich / Switzerland – The responsAbility Sustainable Food Latam Fund invests USD 25 million in Campos Borquez, a leading regenerative producer of organic vegetables and fruits in Mexico.

The fund supports Latin America-based integrated producers of agricultural products for global exports, predominantly fruits and vegetables. It provides long-term capital in the form of tailor-made structured credit solutions to finance the growth and expansion of export-oriented companies.

First regenerative, organic producer in Mexico

Campos Borquez is run by a four-generation farming family with a rich history of growth, resilience, community engagement, commitment with the environment and social responsibility. Over the years, the company expanded its operations from table grapes, asparagus and winter crops (broccoli, cauliflower and celery) to avocadoes and mangoes, and was Mexico’s first certified regenerative agriculture farm. Campos Borquez was elected Global Supplier of the Year in 2022 by Whole Foods Markets – the world’s leading natural and organic foods retailer – which is a testimony to the overall excellence of Campos Borquez.

responsAbility – a long-term partner for financial solutions

Sergio and Pablo Borquez, third and fourth generation management of the Campos Borquez organization commented, “We are very happy to have a long-term partner like responsAbility providing us with a tailored finance solution that adapts to our crop cycles and our maturing expansion projects, and thus helped us in re-structuring our balance sheet and financing our future growth. We appreciate the ongoing assistance of the responsAbility team helping us take our company to the next level, from an operational as well as environmental and social perspective.”

Driving growth with a focus on sustainability

"We are excited to make this investment in Campos Borquez, a pioneer in regenerative, organic certified farming in Mexico," said Rik Vyverman, Global Head of Sustainable Food Equity at responsAbility and a founding partner of the fund. "This investment will allow the company to grow in a sustainable way and we are joining forces with them to increase even further the ESG standards within their entire operations.”

Alberto Alonzo and Hector Kuri, founding partners of the fund commented, “We are completely aligned with the Borquez family with regards to what modern farming should look like. This is a great fit with our investment thesis and our fund to support sustainable agriculture in Latin America, while also creating positive environmental and community impact."

Latin America – the Globe’s Garden

Latin America is a region with a competitive advantage in natural resources. It has an enormous biodiversity and different climate zones, making it ideal for multiple growing seasons and both tropical and temperate varieties of fruits and vegetables. Combined with an increasingly health-conscious consumer base, export volumes for fruits and vegetables have grown significantly in recent decades and are expected to continue to grow in the future, driven by the rising consumer demand.

By investing in sustainable agriculture, the responsAbility Sustainable Food Latam Fund is supporting environmentally friendly practices that have a positive long-term impact on local communities and ecosystems.
